EARTH DISCOVERS NEIGHBOUR, BUYS GUN FOR PROTECTION

NATURE magazine’s big story that grabbed headlines around the world today – that an exoplanet near Alpha Centari, which orbits our nearest neighbouring sun, has the potential to harbour life similar to that on earth, is the stuff of science fiction. However, what I found most thrilling was the news that its ‘4.2 lightyears away’ was not an inconceivable distance for probes to reach within our lifetime – albeit decades from now. Especially if the less-exciting version of Dr Xavier, Stephen Hawking’s, plan to hurl space garbage 20% of the speed of light actually works. Which it should… It seems science class could do more for me than just an endless supply of head rushes sucking gas from those metal taps on the desks.
