If you weren’t already aware – chances are the olive oil in your cupboard is neither extra-virgin and probably not 100% made from olives, either. Oh, and that bullshit ‘made in Italy’ stamp – well, that has about as much credibility as the Vatican on protecting children.

If you haven’t seen it – the New York Times did a great animation explaining why your olive oil – probably isn’t made entirely from olives! And now comes word that some of Italy’s biggest olive oil companies have been lying to customers about the kinds of olive oil they were buying.
At issue is oil sold as ‘extra-virgin’ olive oil. That’s oil made from olives that are pressed almost as soon as they are harvested – without any chemicals or additives – unlike regular olive oil. However, Prosecutors in Turin, Italy, are investigating Bertolli, Santa Sabina, Primadonna, Carapelli, Coricelli and Sasso for selling regular olive oil labeled as ‘extra-virgin‘.
